They are not merely linguistic or mental entities but the primar y parts by which the world itself is organized.

Where” and “when,” as they appear within Aristotle’s Categories, are possible kinds of predicates; they are the kinds of things that might be said of substance. ” What are we to make of their appearance there? First, their appearance in the Physics and the apparent relation of Aristotle’ s arguments to Plato’ s Parmenides (and the Timaeus) tells us something important both about Aristotle’ s language and about his definitions of the problems of philosophy: he works with in the broader context of problems def ned by Plato and even the preSocratics.

The first concerns Aristotle’s notion of scientific unity in the Metaphysics, the second the special status given to being in the sense of potentiality and actuality. 42 A similar conviction is echoed in Metaphysics IV, 1–3, where Aristotle explains that a science of being qua being is possible because there is a single principle for each of the senses of being: “There are many senses in which a thing is said to be, but all refer to one principle [ajll' a{pan pro" mivan ajrchvn]” (Metaphysics IV, 2, 1003b5–6).
