Periods of increased turbulence and insecurity in secular society were often accompanied by an upsurge in Pure Land belief. Some schools of Confucianism were open to Buddhist influences, and saw a fundamental harmony between the substance of the teachings of Buddha and the teachings of China's sage, Confucius.
