The windows were glass-unscreened. The doors were unscreened. The downstairs was one large room and a kitchen. Mattie and Ike used the large room for a bedroom, and the whole family used it for a sitting room. The children all slept in the unpartitioned upstairs. They hung a piece of canvas to divide it into two rooms: one for the boys and one for the girls. Mattie had moved her prize possession-a Home Comfort cooking range that had a warming oven and a ten-gallon hot-water reservoir-and she persuaded Ike to install it in the new kitchen, even before the beds were set up.

Mattie's garden began to wilt during the day, and she started carrying water to it in buckets. She didn't know it then, but this would be a pattern she would follow for many years in order to feed her family. The riding and walking plows were changed from planters to cultivators, and the field work went on. They had to thin the cotton. It was a big job, and the whole family-except the two little boys and Emil-worked at it. The accepted way to thin cotton was by chopping Page 20 it with a hoe. But they didn't have enough hoes to go around, so Helen learned to thin it by catching a little cotton plant between her toes and pulling it out of the ground.
