Rund’s new landholding was just north of Bean Blossom, east of Highway 135 and south of the Spearsville Road. He quickly constructed a rural cabin retreat just off the highway for his family’s weekend getaways to Brown County—but much more lay in store for Rund’s land. 1 He was named for his grandfather Franz Rund, who left Wittenberg, Germany, in 1848, settling near Bean Blossom about 1852. The Runds were soon linked by marriage to the McDonalds, whose first local ancestor arrived in Brown County in 1853.

One key network of old-time musicians in Brown County named themselves the Van Buren String Busters. 24 In the early 1940s, the group’s appearances were led by Adolph Beauchamp, known then and after as Doc Beauchamp. Membership in the band was flexible and adaptive. Jack Hendricks left, but others stepped in. Through the war years, Beauchamp’s square dances were typically called to the accompaniment of fiddler Louis Henderson, the banjo of Wilma Anthony Spiker, and the guitar of Wilma’s sister (and Beauchamp’s wife), Hesper “Hep” 10 .

In fact, social change, though inevitable, was sometimes inhibited in nineteenth-century Brown County by self-styled “Regulators,” who monitored the actions and morals of their neighbors. During the Civil War, local Southern sympathizers formed a vigilante group called the Knights of the Golden Circle, who, along with some draft dodgers and deserters, holed up not far from Bean Blossom. They eventually became known as “Whitecappers,” named for the pillowcase hoods they wore. Whitecappers were ideologically allied with the Ku Klux Klan in their avowed regard for law and tradition, justifying their anti-Semitic and anti-Negro stances.
