Camera Scoring System A Douglas Aircraft-designed camera scoring system was made for the OB-17Ls and -Ns. This system was carried in wingtip-mounted pods. Without the pods all dimensions for the aircraft were identical to those on the B-17G. The existing aircraft wingtips could be removed for installation of camera pods. The revised wingtips were contoured for installation of the pods. 38" to 102'. The drawing on page 54 shows the dimensional differences. The scoring camera stores were droppable aluminum pods.
30 Non-armament changes to the aircraft were: The bombardier and navigator duties were combined • • • • • • and served by a single crewmember. The bombardier station was located in a gondola under the nose. The radio compartment was moved forward to the nose, thereby improving the aircraft center of gravity, and greatly enhancing communication with the navigator. The radio operator also served as the nose gunner. Bi-fold bomb bay doors replaced the standard doors. This change reduced drag and improved the ball turret gunner's vision.
