Changing Interactional Behaviour 37 Participants and methodology The two dyads discussed here, Connie and Sam and Len and Jane,1 were both married couples where one partner had aphasia following a cerebro-vascular accident (CVA) in the left cerebral hemisphere. Both people with aphasia had a non-fluent, Broca-type aphasia. Also, at the time of their intervention both people with aphasia were more than 12 months post-onset and, as such, were beyond the period when changes in linguistic and communicative performance might be due to spontaneous recovery of neural function.
Focusing just on the cases where patients had two or more concerns, and therefore on patients who could have responded affirmatively to the intervention question, we found that, while 53 per cent responded affirmatively to the ‘any’ version of the question, a full 90 per cent responded affirmatively to the ‘some’ version. At this elementary level, our conversation analytic hypothesis was supported to a degree that was well beyond our expectations.
