The first random joint model analysis of this location however, showed a potential instability mechanism that can develop in between the upper and lower level structures, probably developed due to the limited separation of 15 ft.

Kinematic stability analyses were performed with the limit equilibrium software UNWEDGE by Rocscience Inc For numerical modeling and final design purposes the Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) by Itasca was used. For a few selected locations with cross connections between the lower level caverns, three dimensional analyses using the code 3DEC by Itasca, were performed to assess the adequacy of the design. Due to the excavation sequence, which has two 22 ft diameter TBMs boring the running tunnels through the future cavern locations, some initial rock reinforcement is installed from the TBMs.
