Elgin Mills was once a distinct community, quite separate from its southern neighbour, Richmond Hill. It was here that the first settler of Richmond Hill, Balsar Munshaw, took up land. The Munshaw's daughter, Susan, was the first white child born in the Township of Vaughan and the first on Yonge Street.

Clean-cut architecture of its decade, with a few Art Deco touches. It was built on the site of an old dwelling, and was itself replaced in 1984. When Yonge Street was still the major route to the north, the Queen's Hotel was a favourite stopping place for travellers. Additions in the 1930s hid the elegance of the 1860s building, and it was a sad reminder of its former self when demolished in 1971. Map from a 1940s promotional brochure. Of the buildings illustrated, only St Andrew's College, the post office, and the United Church survive.
