National historiography integrated the social, cultural, economic and political development of European societies into a framework of national categories. 9 In 1898 Italian moderates and republicans had two separate marches for the commemorations;10 however, the topic of commemoration was still the Italian Risorgimento. 11 In most commemorations we find very few references to the international or European dimension of the revolution. 12 If through its commemorations 1848 became an event of national rather than European history, historians interested in the relationship between history and memory should reconsider 1848 from the perspective of this national–international bipolarism, and analyse both the international consciousness expressed in the ideas of 1848 and the process of nationalization within the commemorations.
37 When historians, social scientists or social and political ‘communities of commemoration’ evaluate 1848 as a positive or a negative development they are viewing the events from their specific political standpoint. However, the politics of 1848 were not only about constitutional and national claims. 38 While the public image of gender was modelled and restrengthened through the revolutionary and especially the parliamentary experience, 1848 also challenged – within a limited space and for a short period of time – traditional gender relations and provoked temporary progress in the emancipation of women.
In consequence, the Paris February Revolution of 1848 appeared a key event in the further European development. 22 Contemporary revolutionary discourse does not only reveal connections with events in France. 23 With regard to the German revolution of 1848, and more specifically the radical movement in the German South-West, one should not underestimate the impact of the constitutional battles in Switzerland:24 ‘Im Hochland fiel der erste Schuß’ recalls one of the famous songs of the revolution by Ferdinand Freiligrath.
